October 2023
When the talk of Alcoa building a plant in Maniitsoq first began, a wave of excitement and hope rose in Maniitsoq. People dreamt of renewal and growth. The idea of Maniitsoq Tour Boat was born during this atmosphere of optimism. Having already established a hotel business in the town, Søren Lyberth, the company’s founder, saw a natural opportunity to combine the two businesses.
Maniitsoq Tour Boat quickly became a key player in the region’s tourism sector. Although Maniitsoq doesn’t necessarily experience a massive influx of tourists like other Greenlandic towns, Søren Lyberth and his team have specialized in servicing exclusive segments of tourists. These visitors are primarily attracted to heliskiing and angling – two activities that have created significant demands for staying in the area.
However, the company’s influence extends beyond just the tourism sector. Maniitsoq Tour Boat also plays a crucial role in the region’s infrastructure. Søren Lyberth explains how the abandoned Alcoa project led to a need for creative thinking. With a significant investment in boats, he decided to take the initiative and offer transportation services between Maniitsoq and Nuuk, which has eased travel options for citizens and strengthened the connection between the towns.
Maniitsoq, often described as the “Venice of Greenland,” is a gem of a town. Built on an archipelago connected by bridges, its many canals create a unique atmosphere. With Maniitsoq Tour Boat, tourists and locals experience the town from the water, providing a different and unforgettable experience.
In addition to tour boats, Søren Lyberth runs several other businesses, including a hotel. He emphasizes the importance of delegating responsibilities and keeping an overview of all his businesses.
Partnerships and collaboration have been key to Maniitsoq Tour Boats’ success. In addition to working with local businesses, Søren Lyberth has also developed a strong relationship with Greenland Business Association. This collaboration has given him access to expertise and advice, further strengthening his business model.
Looking to the future, Søren Lyberth has big dreams for Maniitsoq Tour Boat. He wants to continue serving Maniitsoq’s citizens and tourists with passion and innovation. He is already preparing for the new runway in Nuuk (coming at the end of 2024) by investing in a third Targa boat, increasing the frequency of boat trips between the towns.
We extend our hearty congratulations to Maniitsoq Tour Boat, the company of the month. We look forward to following the company’s continued growth and success in the future.
