A large Greenlandic delegation is currently in Toronto, Canada, participating in the large international PDAC convention for actors within the mineral sector.
In connection with the convention, Greenland Business Association and the Ministry of Mineral Resources co-hosted the event Greenland Day, where representatives from businesses, authorities and other actors from all over the world had the opportunity to learn more about our business potentials, through presentations from local service providers and from businesses, who share their experiences with exploring and extracting minerals in Greenland.
Minister for Mineral Resources, Aqqaluaq B. Egede, opened the event, with the following words:
“Exploration and mining projects create local employment – both within the mineral resources companies and through subcontractors. We must become better at clarifying the benefits from exploration and the mining projects to the local community, and we need to make it easier for the industry to involve Greenlandic workers so that the benefits are strengthened. Among other things, we must ensure that there is a trained workforce within the professional groups demanded by the mineral resources industry.”
Christian Keldsen, Director of Greenland Business Association agrees:
“The mineral sector has great potential for generating growth in Greenland. Therefore, it is important that we work continuously for securing the best possible environment for attracting international investors to projects here in our country. This is done, for example, through securing stable political, fiscal and infrastructural framework – but we also need to focus on education within the professions demanded by the companies. Local labour is in high demand and local involvement is very important. Both to the companies, our local providors and our community.”
The Greenland Day-event was very popular among conference attendees and there was a large interest in the potentials in Greenland. The Government of Greenland as well as several Greenlandic businesses are attending the PDAC-convention June 13.-15.
