BUSINESS OF THE MONTH: PETER PARS A/S

6. August 2024

Peter Pars A/S has been an important player in Greenland’s business community for decades. Founded in 1965 by Peter and Jensigne Pars, the company has a remarkable history of innovation, commitment, and social responsibility.

When Peter Pars completed his military service, his life took an unexpected turn. An advertisement for an electrician position in Ilulissat caught his attention, and the journey began. After completing an electrician exam in Denmark, Peter returned to Ilulissat and founded the electrical company Peter Pars A/S on November 2, 1965. Initially, they bought materials from the Greenland Technical Organization (GTO), but soon, they developed their own supply chain. The couple settled in Ilulissat and built their own house with a small workshop, which was the start of their successful business.

Their son Jens, also a trained electrician, took over the company’s management in 1999 after completing a degree in electrical engineering. The transition to the second generation was carefully planned over more than six years, ensuring a smooth transition and preserving the company’s values and traditions. Jens has since implemented several important changes, including the company’s planning, dimensioning, and drawing of electrical tasks. This has led to a wide range of projects, including renovating the Black Blocks in Ilulissat and constructing the new Halibut Factory.

Peter Pars A/S has also focused on renewable forms of energy and, in 2010, received the Government of Greenland’s Environment and Nature Prize in the renewable energy category. The company has also established a small plumbing department that handles tasks within this industry.

Regarding the future, Jens is planning a possible generational change to the 3rd generation. His son Nicklas, also a trained electrician, plans to take an electrician’s diploma to continue the family business. Jens wants to follow the same principles and methods his parents used, which has proven successful.

Peter Pars A/S plays an important role in Ilulissat and has supported the local community in many ways. The company has trained around 60 apprentices, which has benefited the company and the local community. They have avoided importing labor and solved all tasks with local employees. Jens calls for a greater effort to educate the local population, as there is a shortage of skilled labor in many trades.

The company has also actively supported local cultural and sporting events over the years. Jens looks forward to continuing to run the business, focusing on sustainability, employee well-being, and green transition. He believes that the way forward is a triple-win situation where the company, customers, and financial institutions benefit.
